The West High School rebuild represents a historic investment in one of Utah’s most significant educational institutions. Originally opened in 1890, West is the state’s oldest public high school, and the new approximately $300 million campus will replace aging infrastructure with flexible classrooms, collaborative learning areas, performing arts spaces, athletic facilities, and technology designed for modern education.
Hughes General Contractors is delivering the multi-year project in carefully coordinated phases so students can remain in the existing school while the new campus rises across 300 West. Phase One includes the main school building, five-story academic tower, and athletic field house. Construction is well underway, with extensive ground improvement, footings, and foundations in place and the first architectural tilt-up concrete wall panels already standing.
After students transition into the new building, the project will move into its second phase, replacing athletic facilities on the site of the current school. The historic clock tower and other recognizable elements are planned for preservation and incorporation into the renewed campus, connecting more than a century of tradition with a forward-looking environment built to serve Salt Lake City students and the broader community for generations.
