West High Historic Legacy Continues with New School

West High School has stood as a pillar of education in Utah since 1921. As the state’s oldest high school, its legacy is woven into the fabric of Salt Lake City generation after generation has walked its halls, cheered in its stadiums, and graduated with pride. Now, more than a century later, a new chapter begins. Following the passage of a $730 million bond approved by voters in 2024, the Salt Lake City School District is embarking on a transformative journey to rebuild West High School. The new campus will be a blend of ultramodern design and historical reverence, with features that reflect both the school's storied past and its bold future. From high-tech learning dens and flexible classrooms to a state-of-the-art auditorium and athletic complex, the redesign is a long-term investment in student success, safety, and innovation.

Hughes General Contractors is honored to be selected as the general contractor for this monumental project. With deep roots in Utah and a longstanding commitment to educational construction, Hughes brings not only technical expertise but a deep respect for the legacy of West High School. The company understands that this isn’t just a rebuild, it’s a renewal of purpose for a school that has shaped lives for over 100 years.

"The new academic buildings will rise on the south end of the property, replacing outdated infrastructure with modern facilities that meet today’s educational standards. The design, led by VCBO Architecture, incorporates elements inspired by the original building’s iconic maroon brick, ensuring that the spirit of West High remains visible and tangible. Even the preserved facade of the original main entrance will serve as a gateway to the future football stadium, symbolizing the bridge between past and present.

This project is more than construction, it’s a community effort. The Salt Lake City School District has engaged students, families, and alumni throughout the planning process, recognizing the emotional connection many have to the school. Hughes shares that sentiment. The team is proud to contribute to a project that honors tradition while embracing progress.

‍
As construction begins, Hughes is committed to minimizing disruption, maintaining safety, and delivering a campus that reflects the district’s vision for the next century of learning. The rebuild is expected to span several years, with completion anticipated between 2031 and 2033.

‍
For Hughes, being part of this journey is a privilege. The company is proud to stand alongside the Salt Lake City School District in shaping a future where students thrive in spaces designed for collaboration, creativity, and growth. West High School’s legacy will live on, not just in memory, but in every brick, beam, and classroom of its new home."
